Background on South Sudan
Background
South Sudan is the world's youngest country, having gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after decades of civil war. Located in East-Central Africa, it is a land of vast plains and the Sudd, one of the world's largest wetlands, formed by the White Nile. The nation is home to diverse ethnic groups, including the Dinka and Nuer, whose traditional lives revolve around cattle, which are seen as symbols of wealth and social status.
The economy is almost entirely dependent on oil, which accounts for the vast majority of government revenue and exports. However, the country has been hindered by internal conflict, which has displaced millions and stalled the development of other sectors like agriculture and mining. Despite these hardships, South Sudan possesses some of the most fertile land in Africa and incredible potential for hydroelectric power along the Nile.
Tourism is currently very limited due to security concerns, but South Sudan holds one of the world's greatest natural secrets. It is home to the second-largest animal migration on earth, where millions of kob and gazelle move across the Boma-Jonglei landscape. For the truly intrepid, a journey to the Sudd offers a look at a unique ecosystem of papyrus reeds and floating vegetation, while the remote mountain ranges near the border with Uganda offer trekking opportunities in a landscape that has remained largely untouched by the modern world.
