Background on Lesotho
Background
Lesotho is a high-altitude, landlocked kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, often called the "Kingdom in the Sky." It is the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 meters in elevation. The landscape is rugged and mountainous, defined by the towering Maloti and Drakensberg ranges. The Basotho people, known for their iconic conical hats and colorful wool blankets, have a fierce sense of independence, having successfully defended their mountain stronghold from various colonial and regional powers.
The economy of Lesotho is deeply integrated with South Africa's, with many citizens working in South African mines or industries. Domestically, the "white gold" (water) is the most valuable resource; the Lesotho Highlands Water Project exports water to the thirsty industrial heartland of South Africa while generating hydroelectric power for Lesotho. Agriculture and a growing textile manufacturing sector are also vital. Despite these resources, the country faces high levels of poverty and environmental challenges like soil erosion.
Tourism in Lesotho is an adventurer's dream. It is one of the few places in Africa where you can experience snow and even go skiing at Afriski, one of the continent's two ski resorts. Pony trekking is the most popular way to explore the rugged interior, allowing visitors to reach remote villages and see ancient San rock art. The Maletsunyane Falls, which plunges 192 meters into a deep gorge, is home to the world’s highest commercial abseil (rappel), offering a true adrenaline rush for visitors.
