Background on Eritrea
Background
Eritrea is a resilient nation in the Horn of Africa with a long Red Sea coastline that has historically made it a crossroads of trade and culture. After a 30-year war for independence from Ethiopia, Eritrea emerged as a sovereign state in 1993. The capital, Asmara, is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in Africa, famously dubbed "La Piccola Roma" (Little Rome) for its remarkably preserved Italian Art Deco and Futurist architecture, which earned it UNESCO World Heritage status.
The economy is primarily based on subsistence agriculture and mining, with significant deposits of gold, copper, and zinc. Eritrea follows a policy of "self-reliance," which has led to a highly centralized government and limited foreign investment. While this has helped the country maintain a high level of social order and low crime, it has also led to international isolation and a mandatory national service program that has driven many young Eritreans to emigrate. The culture is a rich tapestry of nine different ethnic groups, split almost equally between Christians and Muslims.
Tourism in Eritrea is a journey back in time. Asmara’s cafe culture and historic cinemas are a delight for architecture and history buffs. The port city of Massawa offers a hauntingly beautiful mix of Ottoman, Italian, and Egyptian ruins along the coast. For nature lovers, the Dahlak Archipelago consists of over 100 largely uninhabited islands with pristine coral reefs that offer some of the best, most untouched diving and snorkeling spots in the entire Red Sea region.
