Background on Chad

Background

Chad is a massive, landlocked country bridging North and Central Africa, often called the "Dead Heart of Africa" due to its distance from the ocean and its largely arid climate. The geography is starkly divided into three zones: the Saharan desert in the north, an arid Sahelian belt in the center, and a more fertile Sudanian savanna in the south. The capital, N'Djamena, lies on the border with Cameroon, right at the confluence of the Chari and Logone rivers.

For decades following its independence from France, Chad's economy was almost entirely based on agriculture and livestock. In 2003, the nation became an oil-exporting country, which brought a massive influx of revenue but also complicated its political landscape, which has been dominated by strongman rule and frequent armed rebellions. The country also faces severe environmental threats, most notably the rapid shrinking of Lake Chad, which sustains millions of people across four nations.

For the highly adventurous tourist, Chad offers some of the most dramatic and remote landscapes on earth. The Ennedi Massif in the northeast is a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site featuring towering sandstone arches, deep gorges, and ancient Saharan rock art. In the southeast, Zakouma National Park is an incredible conservation success story; once ravaged by poaching, it is now a thriving sanctuary offering off-the-grid safaris with massive herds of elephants, lions, and an abundance of birdlife.
