The Central African Republic is a vast, landlocked nation geographically positioned at the very center of the African continent. The capital, Bangui, sits on the banks of the Ubangi River, which forms the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. When safe to visit, the jewel of the country is the Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve in the dense southwestern rainforest. It is one of the best places on the planet to observe habituated western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, and elusive bongo antelopes gathering at natural forest clearings known as *bais*.
